National Week of Action (NWA)
March 27-31, 2023
Each year, the Millennial Action Project hosts a week of action to catalyze and amplify the Future Caucus Network’s efforts to bridge the political divide. We mobilize young people — legislators and community members — to join together and build a new narrative around what political collaboration looks like. Together, we can bring civility to the political discourse and prove that good governance begins with meaningful collaboration.
To us, this week of action means moving beyond conventional party divides and inviting all perspectives into the conversation. Members of the Future Caucus Network have put public service above partisanship, and this week of action is about showcasing how they work together.

7PM - 8:30PM ET: EFFECTIVE LAWMAKERS’ PLAYBOOK
As part of MAP’s ongoing leadership development offerings, state lawmakers have an opportunity to participate in a negotiation workshop during National Week of Action.
About the training: The only way to get a bill passed in the legislature or an ordinance passed through city council is to get a majority of your colleagues to support it. While coalition building is essential for a functioning democracy, it seems to have become a lost art of late. In this session, we will help participants rediscover the art of finding common ground by examining and practicing strategies for finding that “sweet spot” in negotiations where everybody gets something and nobody gets nothing. Participants will take part in an activity where they have to find consensus as members of the House and Senate Budget Conference Committee on a variety of contentious issues.

RECOGNIZING OUR POLICY CHAMPIONS!
On our social media channels, we will be highlighting policy champions who are doing critical legislative work in our four focus areas:
Strengthening Democracy: Free, fair elections and good governance are two cornerstones of a vibrant democracy. Our young legislators are working together to modernize legislatures, safeguard our elections, ensure that all eligible voters can cast ballots, and bring lawmaking into the 21st century. These post-partisan actions strengthen our democratic institutions by engaging Millennial leaders across the political spectrum and spurring innovative legislation.
Criminal Justice Reform: It is well documented that the United States incarcerates a larger percentage of its citizens than any other country. This statistic weighs heavily not only on the public conscience of the nation, but also the pocketbooks of state taxpayers burdened by the price of an overcrowded prison system. The “tough on crime” mentality that dominated the 1990s is losing favor across the political spectrum, especially as rehabilitative support services show promising results and the role of mental illness in criminal behavior is explored more thoroughly.
Energy & Environment: Climate change and environmental degradation are a defining generational challenge. Millennial legislators are leading the fight to introduce cutting-edge technologies that modernize energy production and grid infrastructure, and environmental protections that improve Americans’ quality of life. These efforts illuminate an underlying post-partisan commitment to building a resilient and vibrant America, prepared to lead the world with innovative and daring solutions to changing energy needs and a new generation of conservation.
Future of Work: The American economy is changing rapidly. Automation, the expansion of gig and independent work, trade disruption, and the growth of the information economy, have all put pressure on American businesses and the American workforce. To adapt to the change, our young legislators work across the political aisle to develop policies that will drive innovation while securing workers’ and students’ rights.
