On January 13th, 2021 the United States House of Representatives passed H.Res24, impeaching President Donald J. Trump for inciting an insurrection against the government of the United States. The resolution passed, 232-197, with all Democrats and ten Republicans voting in support of the single article of impeachment.
Among those voting to impeach President Trump were Congressional Future Caucus (CFC) Co-Chairs Reps. Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH-16) and Haley Stevens (D-MI-11). Rep. Gonzalez laid out his reasons for voting in favor of impeachment.
Rep. Gonzalez stated,
“The President of the United States helped organize and incite a mob that attacked the United States Congress in an attempt to prevent us from completing our solemn duties as prescribed by the Constitution.”
Rep. Gonzalez considered the President’s actions to be “fundamental threats to people’s lives and the very foundation of the Republic.” Rep. Gonzalez stood up for what he believes to be right for the United States and our democratic republic.
Republican House members who voted to impeach President Trump alongside Rep. Gonzalez include:
CFC member Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL)
CFC member Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA)
Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI)
Rep. David Valado (R-CA)
Rep. John Katko (R-NY)
Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA)
Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC)
Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI)
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY)
Pointing beyond mere politics, Rep. Stevens stated that “...our nation was attacked by enemies from within as Congress met to certify the Election College results.” Rep. Stevens pointed to the statements and actions of President Trump, particularly, “His incendiary posts on social media in the weeks following the election, and his calls to action at a rally immediately preceding the attack last week.” Rep. Stevens urged the Senate to defend the Constitution and remove and bar President Trump from holding federal elected office.
Co-chairs and members of MAP’s Congressional Future Caucus are at the forefront in asserting Congress’s accountability mechanism. CFC Emeritus co-chair Rep. Joe Neguse (D-CO) is one of nine impeachment managers. Rep. Neguse is joined by CFC members Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Rep.Joaquin Castro (D-TX), along with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI), Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA), Rep. Madeline Dean (D-PA), and Rep. Stacey Plaskett (D-VI). CFC co-chairs Reps. Gonzalez and Stevens joined with CFC members Rep. Kinzinger and Rep. Herrera Beutler to ensure that the President’s conduct and statements have consequences and illustrated that members of Congress swear an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, not any member of a political party.
