On September 23, Georgia Future Caucus member Representative Park Cannon spoke to students enrolled in American University’s Women & Politics Institute.
Rep. Cannon discussed her career in public service and women’s leadership. She encouraged students to educate themselves about election laws in their respective states, and to become a part of the process and lobby their legislators, “Everyone should be empowered to talk to their local elected officials and to know that their story matters and that their voice is heard.” She also underscored that young women should run for office as soon as possible, and not wait for someone else to lead.
Rep. Cannon closed the conversation with encouraging words for the students, “It's easy to get disheartened, especially with the current political climate, but for every elected official that is not showing up in a way that you believe reflects the values of their districts, states, or the country, there is someone like me that represents all of the constituents.”
