As two young legislators from opposite parties and different parts of the country, we may not have much in common at first glance.But we both care deeply about government transparency and accountability, and are strong advocates for women’s leadership. That’s why we’re founding members of a new, bipartisan initiative called the Democracy Reform Task Force.

COLUMBUS— With unanimous, bipartisan support, the Ohio Senate today passed a plan to reform the process for drawing Ohio’s congressional districts. The passage of Substitute Senate Joint Resolution 5 follows weeks of good faith negotiations between the leadership of both parties in the General Assembly and various redistricting reform advocates.

On Monday night, the Ohio state Senate did something truly unprecedented: With near-unanimous support from both Republicans and Democrats, the chamber approved Senate Resolution 5, a measure that would for the first time require bipartisan input and approval for federal congressional maps. The measure is expected to pass the state House today, and it will appear on the ballot in the May primary elections to get final approval from voters.

RELEASE: Young State Legislators From Across Country Launch Bipartisan Democracy Reform Task Force

Today, twelve young state legislators from across the country announced the creation of the Democracy Reform Task Force to advance legislation on redistricting, government accountability, and access to voting. The lawmakers, all leaders on the forefront of these issues, are reaching across state and party  lines with the goal of finding innovative solutions to government reform and sharing their findings with lawmakers across the nation.
