Ohio Future Caucus Co-Chair Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley Township) recently joined Governor John Kasich to sign Senate Bill 63 into law, establishing a system of online voter registration in the state. Senator LaRose originally introduced the bill in 2013.
The legislation enables the Ohio Secretary of State to create a statewide system in the coming years, one which provides for instant cross-checking with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ database to ensure accuracy and prevent fraud. When fully enacted, the law would still maintain paper voter registration as an option for Ohioan voters.
Ohio joins 31 other states in adopting online voter registration. According to Pew, states which have enacted online voter registration systems have saved citizens millions of dollars and significant time.
Senator LaRose offered that the new system will usher in a new age of efficiency in Ohio, bolstering both public confidence through the modernization effort. ”Bringing online voter registration to Ohio represents years of bipartisan collaboration. This effort would not have been possible without the hard work and input of interested groups from around the state,” he noted.
